The environmental systems considered encompass the atmosphere (including air pollution and climate change), land (involving forests, biomasses, soil contamination, etc.), water resources (covering surface and groundwater, marine and coastal waters), and renewable energy systems (such as solar, wind, bioenergy, biofuels, hydrogen). Approaches encompass a wide range of methodologies. They span traditional non-linear dynamic modeling and control techniques to more advanced methods, including multi-objective and multi-criteria optimization, agent-based and participatory modeling, integrated assessment, uncertainty management, data assimilation, artificial intelligence, machine learning methods, risk management, and decision support systems.
