Welcome Message from the TC8.3 Chair 2023–2026

Welcome to IFAC Technical Committee 8.3. The committee focuses on the monitoring, modeling, and control of environmental systems to support sustainable and informed decision-making for climate, natural resources, and renewable energy systems.

Welcome to TC 8.3. We are dedicated to studying the monitoring, modeling, and control of environmental systems. Our aim is the development of methodologies and tools to support sustainable, cost-effective, and socially acceptable decision-making processes. These processes are crucial in addressing climate change, the relationship between humans and the environment, and human well-being.

The environmental systems considered encompass the atmosphere (including air pollution and climate change), land (involving forests, biomasses, soil contamination, etc.), water resources (covering surface and groundwater, marine and coastal waters), and renewable energy systems (such as solar, wind, bioenergy, biofuels, hydrogen). Approaches encompass a wide range of methodologies. They span traditional non-linear dynamic modeling and control techniques to more advanced methods, including multi-objective and multi-criteria optimization, agent-based and participatory modeling, integrated assessment, uncertainty management, data assimilation, artificial intelligence, machine learning methods, risk management, and decision support systems.
